ZAMBOANGA CITY (Annie Dingle / 03 Feb) The Department of Trade and Industry in Zamboanga City held a special meeting with sugar retailers and wholesalers following reports that the prices of sugar have gone up the past weeks.
The highest price for a kilo white sugar reached P39.50 and for the brown sugar P32.50 from as low as P35.00 in the past, and the sudden increase in the prices has alarmed many consumers.
In the meeting, many retailers claimed they bought sugars from suppliers as far as Dumaguete, Iloilo and Negros Occidental provinces which sold sugar from up to P1,800 per sack. And on top of this, the suppliers have been controlling the sale of sugar to local retailers.
Retaliers said the price increase was also due to the high cost of buying sugar from suppliers in the provinces and bringing them to Zamboanga City.
Engr. Rolando G. Acuña, head of of the DTI in Zamboanga City announced during the meeting that the government has already approved the importation of some 50,000 metric tons of sugar to cushion the impact on soaring prices.
He urged local retailers to form a group and request the government for sugar allocation to Zamboanga City. He said the DTI will continue to monitor the prices of sugar and other basic commodities in Zamboanga City to ensure uniform prices in the market.
