Dear Friends in Media,
In this dark hour when press freedom in the Philippines is severely threatened by Proclamation 1017 of Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, we the members of Voices of Women for Civil Liberties (VOWCL) give you our relentless support.
We bear witness to government's raid and virtual takeover of the Daily Tribune, the deployment of military and police personnel around the premises of media outlets, the suspension of the airing of a certain radio program, the threat of closure to media entities and arrest of media practitioners who become critical of her policies, and the imposition of guidelines on what to air and what to write.
No amount of denial from the apologists of Pres. Arroyo could cover-up the fact that these acts curtail the freedom of the press to cover, air, and print news and information about the political situation. For years, you have helped us in bringing to the attention of the general public the issues of women and in educating them on women's rights.
As we start the celebration of Women's Month, let us make strong stand against Proclamation 1017 and against media repression and suppression. We are behind you in your steadfast fight for freedom of the press and for freedom of speech and expression!
Sincerely,
Liza Lamis
