New Power Transmission Project To Spur Investments In Mindanao

DAVAO CITY (Liza Lacuesta / 24 Mar) Mindanao's power grid strengthens further as anewly-approved transmission line project is set to kick off this year tolight up more businesses and industries in the island-region.
A total of P8.15 billion funding has recently been approved for theMindanao Backbone Transmission Project by the Investment CoordinationCommittee-Cabinet Committee (ICC-CC) of the National EconomicDevelopment Authority (NEDA) Board.
Announced by the National Transmission Corporation (TransCo) at the recently held Mindanao Stakeholders Consultation on Status of Power Projects in Davao City, the Mindanao Backbone Transmission Project, comprising of Abaga-Kirahon and the Kirahon-Maramag-Bunawan 230-kV transmission line projects, has earned the nod of NEDA Board-ICC early this month after reviewing its economic viability and capacity to sustain an efficient supply of power in Mindanao.
Dr Alan Ortiz, TransCo chief, said the P8.15 billion transmission project will serve as a reliable electricity highway that would transmit increased power safely from the power generation plants in Northern Mindanao to major electricity consumers across the island.
The project is also seen to provide sufficient transmission capacitythat will prevent widespread power interruptions.
As consultations have been made with the indigenous communities, whoselands the transmission lines will pass through, Ortiz said.
The project ensures that its implementation will be sensitive and beneficial to the said communities.The project was prioritized for immediate implementation after the previously held multi-sectoral consultation with Mindanao stakeholders in Davao City.
