ZAMBOANGA CITY (Zamboanga / 03 May) Airport operation in the southern Philippine city of Zamboanga was stalled Wednesday after two tires of a Manila-bound Cebu Pacific plane burst in the middle of the runway of the Zamboanga Internal Airport.
The plane was still on the runway taxing when two rear tires burst, but no passengers were hurt, airport police said. A military truck tried, but failed to tow the aircraft. Reporters were not allowed near the runway.
The airliner is owned by Cebu Air, of the JG Summit Holdings Inc. Its mechanics are flying to Zamboanga City to bring new set of tires, airport authorities said.
Airport maintenance crew blamed the dilapidated runway for the accident and urged authorities to immediately repair the runway also used by local and foreign military aircrafts.
The biggest plane to use the runway was the U.S military Globe Master cargo aircraft which ferried anti-terror troops and equipment during last month’s joint military training exercise.
