ZAMBOANGA CITY (Darwin Wee / 16 Aug) Zamboanga City Mayor Celso Lobregat on Thursday said that he was negotiating with some of the country's giant telecommunication firms to put fiber optic connection that will cater to the industry's growing demands.
He said that a Filipino-American contact center firm, the G-Com Ltd., is seriously considering putting up an initial 150-seats calling center this year, but there is a need to upgrade the telecommunication facilities in Zamboanga, such as fiber optic connections.
"We are now trying to negotiate with telecom service providers, such as the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company and its affiliate Smart Communications, and Bayan Telecommunications Inc., and also the Globe Telecom and some of them are willing to look at the possibility of installing fiber optic facilities here," Lobregat said.
"Fiber optic and tri-band connections are some of the basic requirements in order for such a place to accommodate calling centers, he told the Zamboanga Journal.
He said top Filipino telecom officials and G-Com executives are expected to attend the 15th Mindanao Business Conference here on August 30.

Zamboanga City Councilor Juan Elago, who chairs the Committee on Information and Communication Technology, said fiber optic connectivity is important in telecommunication industry.
“Fiber optic has the capacity to handle heavy data transmission fast and simple,” he said. “A fiber optic line can contain over 100 independentfibers with each fiber is capable of transporting a massive amount of data from different sources to their destinations.”
He said the project would provide jobs to many people. "Local graduates will have more chances over applicants from other places in getting the jobs as call center agents because of their familiarity with the Spanish language and Arabic,” he said.
At present, ten private universities and colleges here have opened short courses on conversational English, Spanish and Arabic because of growing demands for call center agents.
G-Com LTd. is affiliated with Cyber City Tele-services, Limited (CCTL), a leading provider of customer-related management services and solutions, including offshore call center services.

CCTL, an American company based in New Jersey, is the largest customer-related management call center in the country today.
CCTL currently employs more than more 3,000 agents at the Clark Special Economic Zone in Pampanga province outside Manila; and in Davao City in Mindanao.
Call centers are expected to remain the country's largest employer in the next five years with over 400,000 jobs out of the total 1.2 million for the business process outsourcing sector. Medical transcription and digital content will follow with roughly 350,000, 70,000 and 50,000 jobs respectively, analysts predict.
