ZAMBOANGA CITY (Zamboanga Journal / 09 Aug) A man was killed in a daring broad daylight attack Wednesday in Zamboanga City in the southern Philippines, police and witnesses said.
Witnesses said the assailant, armed with .45-caliber pistol, opened fire on the man who was inside a motorcycle taxi, just in front of the Zion Evangelical School near downtown Zamboanga. Policemen said they recovered five empty shells of .45-caliber pistol from the scene.
The unidentified man was shot in the face and body several times. The attacker took the man's bag before escaping on a motorcycle that followed behind the vehicle, according to witnesses.
The driver of the taxi said he ran inside the school after the gunman shot the man. "I saw three men and was really scared so I ran inside the school after the first shot and I hid and sought help from the teachers," he said.
The motive of the attack was unknown, but dozens of people, including policemen and soldiers, had been killed in a series of gun attacks the past weeks in Zamboanga City. On Monday, a policeman was also shot dead at a bus depot in Zamboanga.
"We still don't know the motive of the latest killing or who was behind it," a police investigator said.
More than 300 people had been killed in summary executions the past four years in Zamboanga City and authorities blamed hired assassins and the proliferation of illegal weapons for the rising criminalities. Dozens of people were also injured in a spate of base ball bat attacks by gangs since early this year.
