Zamboanga Chamber Receives Fund For SME Projects

ZAMBOANGA CITY (Lowell Vallecer / 09 Aug) The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Western Mindanao handed over some P440,000 to the Zamboanga City Chamber and Industry to finance various SME development projects, officials said.

Officials said the money was part of the P1 Million PROPEL (Promoting Regional Opportunities for Enterprise and Livelihood) Development Fund allocated for Zamboanga City's small and medium enterprises.

Severino Landingin, who represented Naz Manzur, DTI regional director, handed the P440,000 check to Jonah Talaver, of the Zamboanga City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation (ZCCIFI), Inc. on Tuesday.

Zamboanga City is among the 20 pilot areas nationwide identified for assistance under the PROPEL program. PROPEL is a partnership initiative of Senate Majority Leader Francis Pangilinan, the DTI and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The funding comes from Pangilinan’s Priority Development Assistance Fund and the program aims to help increase economic activities in twenty pilot provinces in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao in support of the government’s poverty alleviation program and job creation thrusts.

Landingin said the projects include the conduct of basic skills and skills upgrading trainings and other livelihood enhancement activities for SMEs.

The groups identified to benefit from the projects and activities include among others the Sitio Latap-Limpapa Soft Broom Makers Association; Holy Rosary Family Center in Pasobolong, Katilingban sa Kalambuan Women’s Association and seaweeds farmers in the east west coasts of the city.

The DTI said the remaining fund will be released to the ZCCIFI as soon as the revised project proposals submitted by the chamber shall have been approved by the PROPEL Program Management Committee. (With a report from Darwin Wee)
