ZAMBOANGA CITY (Ulysses E. Israel / 22 Aug) Mayor Celso L. Lobregat awarded scholarships to some 50 beneficiaries for trainings on welding and on-call center agent as part of the city government's employment generation program.
The beneficiaries, 25 for call center agent training and another 25 for welding, will be trained for eventual employment by Gcom for call center agent trainees and by local metal industries for welders.
The awarding of scholarships was made during the launching of PGMA Training for Work Scholarship Project held last week at the City Hall.
Present during the event were Zeus Ampuyas, regional director of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority; Chita Cilindro, regional director of the Department of Labor and Employment; Gina Sanchez of the Human Resources Development Office, and Councilor Benjamin Guingona III.
Lobregat said the granting of scholarships was made possible after he wrote TESDA Secretary Bobby Syjuco to include Zamboanga City in the TESDA's work scholarship program under the PGMA training for work program of President Gloria Arroyo.
Ampuyas said there were two courses up for scholarship: call center agent training with P5,000 worth of training hours and welding with P10,000 worth of training hours.
The scholars for welding training will be trained at TESDA in San Roque village in Zamboanga City, while those who qualified for call center agent training will be trained at six TESDA-registered training centers, namely, AMA, STI, E-World, J-JIREH, COMTECH and Universidad de Zamboanga.
He said 100 slots more will be awarded in the future in line with government's efforts to develop and enhance "critical skills" that are currently in demand in the city.
The two courses offered for scholarships are: Shielded metal arc welding and gas metal arc welding and Finishing Course on English Communication Skills Proficiency.
Lobregat said Raymund M. Gacho, Gcom general manager, said the company plans to put up a call center here owing to the availability of manpower for its operations.
He said Gcom is looking at the Spanish speaking market for BPO (Business Processing Operations) where local Chavacano-speaking Zamboangueños have the advantage of providing the required language skills.
He said the city has also provided significant number of competent manpower for the operations of Gcom's two branches in the country.
