ZAMBOANGA CITY (Darwin Wee / 03 Sept) Mindanao businessmen have submitted to President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo a proposal urging the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) to adopt the Phased Improvement and Transfer Development Strategy for the new Zamboanga International Airport.
Traders also passed a resolution to accelerate the connections of fiber optic from the telecommunication-giant firm Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company to the Zamboanga Free Port and Economic Zone Authority.
The two resolutions were passed by the Mindanao Business Council (MBC) during the closing ceremony of the three-day 15th Mindanao Business Council on Saturday.
Being the country's gateway to the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area, the upgrading of the Zamboanga International Airport "will enhance operational safety and service efficiency in order to cater to bigger aircraft and traffic for safe and efficient international and domestic travels, the resolution said.
More than 360,000 passengers and some 5,580 metric tons of cargoes had passed the airport, making it one of the busiest in Mindanao.
Currently, three of the nation's major carriers the Philippine Airlines, Air Philippines and Cebu Pacific, have regular flights from Manila, Cebu, Davao and Zamboanga. And just last week, the Russian-Filipino-owned Mosphil Aero Incorporated launched its Zamboanga-Sandakan-Kota-Kinabalu route, and Manila-Zamboanga-Jolo route.
Georgina Yu, head of the Zamboanga City Freeport, said PLDT earlier promised to put up fiber optic connection to cater to the growing needs of investors at the Freeport zone.
She said there are at least three IT company investors – Phil Wave and Eyeglobal for e-gaming and contact center G-Com Limited – which signified to put up their operation inside this year.
