Nur Misuari Is Freed!

Nur Misuari. (Mindanao Examiner)

JOLO ISLAND (Juan Magtanggol / 01 Sept) Jailed Moro National Liberation Front chieftain Nur Misuari was temporarily to attend the 10th anniversary celebration of the peace accord between Manila and the former rebel group in the southern Philippine port city of Davao.

"Brother Nur is attending the ceremony in Davao," Misuari's aide, Jamasali Abdurahman, told the Mindanao Examiner.

Misuari signed a peace agreement with Manila on Sept. 2, 1996, but many rebels were disgruntled with the accord and accused the Arroyo government of reneging on the peace deal and failing to uplift the living standards of Muslims in the strife-torn Mindanao island.

A Manila court allowed Misuari and an aide on a temporary freedom, said Secy. Jesus Dureza, a peace adviser of the President Gloria Arroyo.

Misuari, former governor of the five-province Muslim autonomous region, is facing rebellion charges after a failed MNLF uprising on Jolo island in 2001. The government accused Misuari of allegedly masterminded the attacks on Jolo.

Hopefully, he brings peace now. If not, back to jail.
