Commentary: Peace And Order Milestone

ROXAS CITY (Alex Lumague / 15 Nov) - The arrest of fugitive former Sen. Gregorio Honasan by the Civilian Intelligence and Detection Group (CIDG) is another milestone in the government’s effort to maintain peace and order and to put down a conspiracy aimed to destabilize the country.

This is an indication that President Gloria Arroyo is serious to keep the growing political stability underlie steady economic growth amidst a continuing insidious propaganda campaign to undermine public trust in the present administration.

Honasan’s capture is a message that no one can make a mockery of the law by playing hide- and-seek with law enforcement agencies and get away with it.

The law enforcers, particularly CIDG, deserve Pres. Arroyo’s commendation which conducted the operation and should be extolled for their hard work that led to the arrest.

Another peace and order milestone in the making is the launching of aggressive efforts to put a stop on political killings by directing the Philippine National Police and Armed Forces of the Philippines as frontlines in deterring such acts. The Melo Commission is also making progress on its mandate to investigate and uncover political killings to make the job done.

These killings are a smear to Philippine democracy and the rule of law but the government is on top of the situation. Determined to solve these killings, the PNP announced recently a bounty for the arrest of suspects for the killing of an Aklan broadcast journalist and Mindanao town mayor to speed up arrest of the assassins.

But these attempts, to stop the culture of violence, maintain peace and order, and protect the democratic and basic human rights of every individual in the country, also calls for the cooperation and vigilance of every Filipino to make both ends meet.

The government has started and is continuously doing its part. Let’s also do our share. (The author writes for the Philipine Information Agency)
