Gunmen Attack Southern Town, 3 Killed

NORTH COTABATO (Juan Magtanggol / 02 Nov) - Three people were killed and five more injured when gunmen attacked Thursday a group of civilians near the municipal hall of Banisilan in North Cotabato province in the troubled southern Philippine region, military officials said.
Brig. Gen. Nehemias Pajarito, commander of the Army's 6th Infantry Division, said the gunmen opened fire on the civilians, killing at least 3 people and wounding 5 others. "Troops are in the area and tracking down the perpetrators," Pajarito told the Mindanao Examiner.
But police reports tagged the attackers as members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the largest Muslim rebel group fighting for independence in the south.
A rebel spokesman Eid Kabalu denied the accusation and said the attack was connected to a family feud. "We have reports saying that the attack was connected to a family feud and had something to do also with local politics," he said without elaborating.
The MILF is currently negotiating peace with the government. (Mindanao Examiner)
