DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / June 9, 2008) – Humanitarian assistance kept pouring for mostly indigenous villagers who were displaced by continued military operations in the southern Philippines.
The Nissin Monde Corporation donated bags of biscuits and noodles for the refugees. Local City Councilor Angela Trinidad, head of the Committee on Women, Children, and Family, also donated school supplies for children in evacuation centers who wanted to continue their education, said Jurie Jaime, convener of the non-government organization called Exodus for Justice and Peace.
Jaime said the donations would be distributed to Lumad and farmers forced to evacuate by ongoing government offensive against communist rebels in Compostela Valley province.
“Donations from Nissin Monde arrived putting smiles on the children's faces, delighted at the frequent arrival of many forms donations for them,” Jaime said.
On Saturday, the Exodus for Justice and Peace and children’s rights groups KABIBA Alliance and the Children Rehabilitation Center in Davao City also launched the Alternative Learning Program, which aimed to help the young refugees. (With reports from Romy Bwaga)
