ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / June 21, 2008) – Three people were injured in a gun attack Saturday at busy market area in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines, police and witnesses said.
Witnesses said the attack occurred at around 8.20 a.m. inside the central market near a police base in downtown Zamboanga. The assailant fled after the attack. “We heard the three gun shots, but did not see the assailant,” one trader told reporters.
Police investigators recovered two empty shells from a .45-caliber pistol. “We are still investigating the shooting. Three people are wounded in the shooting,” a police officer said.
The attack occurred just as police and military tightened security in Zamboanga City because of the government offensive against Abu Sayyaf militants in nearby island of Sulu and Basilan. (Mindanao Examiner)
