ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / August 02, 2008) – Police forces arrested an alleged Abu Sayyaf militant in the southern Philippine port city of Zamboanga, which was bombed in the past by the terrorist group tied to Al-Qaeda and Jemaah Islamiya, reports said Saturday.
It said police said it arrested Ahmad Edris at the port of Zamboanga shortly after he disembarked from a ferry that came from Basilan province, where security forces are hunting down other members of the Abu Sayyaf.
No details were made available about Edris’ arrest on Friday and little is known about the man that police said is included in the government most wanted list. It was unclear how Edris was able to flee from the island without being detected, but police in Basilan said it had no reports about the man’s arrest nor information about his background.
Reports said Edris was involved in several kidnappings in the southern Philippines. It was not immediately known whether Edris was planning to strike in Zamboanga or escaped the ongoing operation in Basilan, about 7 nautical miles from here.
The Abu Sayyaf, listed by the United States as a foreign terrorist organization alongside with al-Qaeda and Jemaah Islamiya, had kidnapped wealthy people and bombed Zamboanga City in the past. (Mindanao Examiner)
