ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / December 11, 2009) - Government soldiers clashed with suspected Abu Sayyaf militants and killed one gunman Friday in Sulu province in the southern Philippines, officials said.
Officials said the fighting broke out after patrolling soldiers spotted a band of Abu Sayyaf militants in the town of Indanan and a running gun battle ensued.
"There were no reports of government casualties," said Major General Benjamin Dolorfino, chief of the military's Western Mindanao Command.
The fighting occured ahead of a scheduled visit Monday of US Ambassador Kristie Kenney who will inaugurate the upgraded water system to the Jolo Mainland Water District.
The project, carried out in partnership between the United States, the Jolo Mainland Water District and the Local Water Utilities Administration is worth P73.1 million ($1.6 million). (Mindanao Examiner)
