BASILAN, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Dec. 14, 2010) – Ten Moro Islamic Liberation Front rebels had surrendered to the military after a series of negotiations in Basilan province in the southern Philippines, officials said Tuesday.
Officials said the rebels also handed over at least 9 high-powered weapons and munitions to the 4th Special Forces Battalion. “This effort was initiated by the unit intelligence operatives and through the negotiations of local mediators,” said Army Colonel Nicanor Dolojan, commander of the Special Operations Task Force-Basilan.
He said more rebels are expected to surrender and rejoin their families in Basilan.
“According Gus, the leader of the group, they decided to return to the folds of the law because they already want to live in peace with their families and loved ones. He further said that they are tired of hiding and fighting in the mountains,” Dolojan told the Mindanao Examiner.
Last week, Dolojan’s group also arrested 8 people for illegal possession of firearms in the island of Sibago off Basilan province. One of those arrested had a warrant of arrest and is facing kidnapping charges. (Mindanao Examiner)
