City official shot in Basilan province


BASILAN, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Jan. 6, 2011) – An unidentified assailant shot and seriously wounded a city official in an attack late Thursday afternoon in the restive province of Basilan in the southern Philippines, police said.

Police said Taib Alejo was shot in the village of San Rafael in Isabela City and has been rushed to hospital. No other details were made available by the authorities.

The Radio Mindanao Network reported that Alejo, a member of the Isabela City Council, was seriously wounded. The motive of the attack was unknown.

On Wednesday, an unidentified gunman also killed a father and his son and wounded two more in an attack in Basilan’s Lamitan town. The victims were buying at a convenience store when the gunman opened fire on them.

The motive of the attack is still unclear but other reports said feud could have triggered the killing.

Gun attacks are not uncommon in Basilan, also a stronghold of Abu Sayyaf rebels blamed for the spate of terrorism and kidnappings in the restive province. (Mindanao Examiner)
