Troops capture 5 Sayyaf militants in Basilan province
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / June 22, 2011) – Security forces stormed an Abu Sayyaf hideout on Wednesday and captured five militants in the restive province of Basilan in the southern Philippines, officials said.
Officials said army soldiers raided the hideout after civilian informants allegedly reported the presence of Abu Sayyaf fighters in the village called Upper Cabengbeng in Sumisip town.
Several gunmen had escaped the raid and broke into smaller groups as they flee away from the soldiers, but officials said troops were pursuing the militants.
It was unknown whether the arrested militants were behind the kidnappings of a resort owner Larry delos Santos who was seized in December and freed engineer Virgilio Fernandez.
A 16-year old student Nico Sebastian is still being held by militants in Basilan, one of five provinces under the Muslim autonomous region. (Mindanao Examiner)
