DAVAO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Oct. 21, 2011) – A communist rebel leader surrendered to the military in the southern Philippines after a series of government negotiations, the military said on Friday.
It said Redante Lansi, alias Ka Marco, surrendered to the 39th Infantry Battalion on Wednesday in Santa Cruz town in Davao del Sur province. Town Mayor Joel Ray Lopez facilitated the surrender of Lansi, who was a political and medical officer for the New People’s Army.
The military said Lansi surrendered due to hardship and conflict from within the ranks of the rebel group, blamed for the recent spate of attacks on government targets and mining firms in Mindanao.
“Redante Lansi disclosed that there is an ongoing leadership debacle in the group. He is experiencing conflict with another NPA leader Roberto Castillote, alias Enoy, with regards as to who’s going to lead the group. Redante also revealed that he was involved in the burning of Holiday bus on May 22in the (the village of) Astorga in Santa Cruz town in Davao del Sur,” it said in a statement sent to the Mindanao Examiner.
