ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Oct. 18, 2010) – The Philippine Army’s 55th Engineer Brigade renewed its commitment to serve the people and country and support the government’s peace and development efforts in Mindanao.
The brigade, now based in Zamboanga City, recently celebrated its 18th anniversary with various activities, including a medical mission that benefitted some 200 villagers here.
With the theme “55E: Rendering the Best of Service for Peace, Unity and Progress across Western Mindanao,” civil-military officer, Major Alfonso Enriquez, said “the anniversary celebration renews our commitment to vanguards of freedom, peace and development by serving God, protecting our country and people.”
He said Lieutenant General Arturo Ortiz, commander of the Philippine Army, graced the occasion and spoke during the program attended both by soldiers and civilians. He also congratulated the awardees of this year’s Unit Best and those behind 55th Engineer Brigade headed by Brigadier General Michaelo Salvaleon.
The engineer brigade was largely credited for many infrastructure projects in Western Mindanao, among them were the rehabilitation and concreting of roads, electrification and water system, construction of health centers and school buildings and hospitals and the rehabilitation of the Basilan circumferential road. Army engineers hold medical mission in Zamboanga village
Army engineers and civilian medical teams hold mercy mission Wednesday, October 13, 2010 in the village of Cabatangan in Zamboanga City in the southern Philippines. Close to 200 villagers benefited from medical and dental mission spearheaded by the 55th Engineer Brigade.ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Oct. 13, 2010) – Close to 200 villagers have benefitted Wednesday from a humanitarian mission conducted by government soldiers in the southern Filipino port city of Zamboanga, officials said.
Officials said the soldiers, mostly members of the 55th Engineer Brigade, held medical mission on a village called Cabatangan. Military and civilian doctors also joined the mercy mission, said spokesman Major Alfonso Enriquez.
The humanitarian mission coincided with the 55th Engineer Brigade’s 18th founding anniversary. “We hope to duplicate this humanitarian mission in other areas, particularly in poor villages in Zamboanga Peninsula. The soldiers and the others who joined this medical and dental mission are very happy to have served the people,” Enriquez said.
Brigadier General Michaelo Salvaleon praised those who participated in the medical mission, saying, the soldiers are partner of the community in peace and development.
“Indeed, the 55th Engineer Brigade will carry out and uphold its mission to achieve peace and development throughout the whole Zamboanga peninsula,” he said.
Local government doctor, Dulce Amor Dagalea, who joined the medical mission also held a lecture on the campaign against the prevention of dengue fever. The lecture explained to villagers the importance of a clean surrounding and proper sanitation to prevent breeding sites of mosquitoes infected with the deadly disease.
Zamboanga is one area in western Mindanao where dengue cases is high. Dengue is an acute, infectious tropical disease caused by an arbovirus transmitted by mosquitoes, and characterized by high fever, rash, headache, and severe muscle and joint pain.
Captain Ceasar Almer Candelaria, a military doctor, headed the medical team from the Camp Navarro General Hospital in Zamboanga City. Village health workers also assisted in the medical mission, which was supported by the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, the Department of Health, Pharmalex, and Philippine Army’s Task Force Zamboanga and the Naval Forces Western Mindanao. 2 soldiers killed outside army base in Basilan province
ISABELA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / June 28, 2009) – Unidentified gunmen killed two soldiers in an attack just outside an army camp in the restive province Basilan in the southern Philippines, officials said.
Officials said two had just bought a cigarette from a store outside their camp in Tipo-Tipo town when gunmen attacked them late Saturday.
“We are still investigating the attack. We don’t know who were behind the attack,” First Lieutenant Steffani Cacho, a regional military spokeswoman, told the Mindanao Examiner.
Cacho did not release the soldiers’ names or say if they were armed or not at the time of the attack. She said the victims were members of the 55th Engineering Brigade deployed in Basilan to repair dilapidated schools.
But police identified the slain soldiers as Technical Sergeant Luciano Abcede and Private First Class Danny Salian.
“We have sent police forces to hunt down the attackers. We don’t know the motive of the killings. Investigation is going on,” said Senior Superintendent Salik Macapantar, the provincial police chief.
Tipo-Tipo is a known lair of Moro rebels blamed for many attacks on security forces. US troops are also deployed in Basilan and helping local soldiers in various humanitarian missions. It was not immediately known whether American forces are also deployed in Tipo-Tipo.
Basilan is one of five provinces under the Muslim autonomous region in Mindanao and a stronghold of various rebel groups, including the most violent al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf and the larger Moro Islamic Liberation Front. (Mindanao Examiner)
