H- Health
During the SAGIP medical missions this year many lumads (especially coming from Ata Manobo and Matigsalug Tribe) were diagnosed and almost 95% were positive of various illnesses mainly tuberculosis, malaria (falsifarum & vivax), scabies, kwashiorkor (severe malnutrition), parasitism, goiter, anemia, etc. Measles, vomiting and diarrhea had taken the lives of more than 20 lumad children in the tribal villages of Talaingod this year. Unabated logging had caused the loss of valuable herbs used in indigenous healing by the Baylan (doctor-priest).
DONATE medicines for these diseases. PROVIDE iodized salt, vitamins and clothings. JOIN medical missions and SHARE your medical skills if you are a health professional/ worker.
E- Environment
Traditionally, Lumads are hunters and gatherers. Big logging concessions, plantations and dams, however have now rendered most forestlands and rivers--- their hunting grounds--- denuded. Breeding habitats for the binaw (deer), the takubong (forest rats), and the baboy ihalas (wild boars) are constricting.
DO YOUR SHARE in reforesting the highlands. DONATE seeds (of hardwood varieties, or fruit tress like durian, native rambutan, mango, jackfruit and seeds of vegetables or food crops).
L- Literacy
The battle against illiteracy is starting at the community-level. More and more lumad organizations under PASAKA are now putting up literacy programs run by native community based teachers. Despite the reported high literacy rate of the country, illiteracy pervades most in the tribal/ lumad hinterland communities. These existing literacy schools (only one graded & formal) teach lumad children the 3Rs in the context of their culture and struggle.
SEND lumad children to literacy school. SPONSOR community literacy programs. SPARE your used/unused notebooks, pencils/ ballpens, pad papers, erasers, chalk, crayons, used clothings, etc. HELP us publish SAGIP’s literacy reading-writing-arithmetic manuals.
P- Production
Long before environmentalism became a fad, lumads already practiced environmentally-sound farming techniques. But the onslaught of logging, mining and other destructive projects have threatened their food security.
HELP lumads increased food production. DONATE farm tools such as bolo, lagaraw, guna, bairan/limbas, etc. SHARE your skills on agriculture.

Australian Exhibit Opens In Manila
MANILA - "My Country: Abstract Interpretations of the Australian Landscape," a visiting exhibition from the collection of the La Trobe University Art Museum in Melbourne, Australia, opens at the Ateneo Art Gallery with a reception on 19 June 2007, Tuesday, at 5:30 in the afternoon.
The exhibition forms part of the 2006-09 Ateneo-La Trobe Art Linkage, and is part of the Ateneo Art Gallery's Engage program where works of significantartists from overseas are shown in the museum.
"My Country" shows alternatives to typical landscape painting by bringing together artists who aim to capture the essence of the Australian landscape and respond to their environment through abstraction.
The exhibition, arguably the most important collection of Australian visual art to be shown in the Philippines to date, includes the work of Australian modernist master Fred Williams, and more contemporary practitioners such as Judy Holding, as well as leading Indigenous artists like Turkey Tolson Tjupurrula.
The exhibition offers a concise overview of a continuing genre central to Australian art, and furthermore, presents uniquely different views, interpretations and processes towards landscape painting.
Preceding the reception on 19 June is an ArtSpeak lecture at 4:00 pm by "My Country" exhibition curator and Managing Curator of La Trobe University ArtMuseum, Vince Alessi. Another ArtSpeak lecture on understanding abstract art will be held on 18 July 2007 at 4:30 p.m.
"My Country" runs at the Ateneo Art Gallery from 13 June to 21 July 2007. The exhibition is supported by the Australian Commonwealth through the Cultural Relations Discretionary Grant Program of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
The Ateneo Art Gallery is open Mondays to Fridays, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 pm, and on Saturdays, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Admission is free.

Learn Linux Apache, MySQL & PHP In Just 24 Hours
E-Learning Centre Inc. and Gooey Software Developers in partnership with International Open Source Network ASEAN+3 Regional Node are inviting those interested to participate in IT training dubbed as "LEARN LAMP (Linux Apache MySQL and PHP) in 24 Hours".
The acronym LAMP refers to a solution stack of Free and Open Source Software programs, used together to run dynamic Websites and servers:
LINUX – Operating SystemApache – Web ServerMySQL – DataBasePHP – Scripting Language
The combination of these technologies is used primarily to define a web server infrastructure, define a programming paradigm of developing software, and establish a software distribution package.
The instructors for this training are internationally certified and experienced developers of Zamboanga City who have deployed projects using the LAMP solution. They have also undergone formal Linux trainers' training under the sponsorship of International Open Source Network and Inwent Germany.

Association of Special Libraries of the Philippines To Hold 3-Day Seminar In Baguio City
The Association of Special Libraries of the Philippines is inviting librarians, library administrators, archivist, records managers, record officers, teachers and students of Library and Information Science and other information specialist to a three-day seminar-workshop on "RECORDS AND INFORMATION RESOURCE MANAGEMENT" on April 25-27, 2007 at El Cielito Inn, Baguio City.
The objectives of the seminar-workshop are to increase awareness on the benefits of a well-organized and well-managed records; learn the importance of retention schedules and identifying and protecting vital records; develop the skills and knowledge of the current procedures, technologies and applications in records and information resources; and apply the best practice applicable in the respective workplace.

US EMBASSY IN MANILA, CONSULAR AGENCY IN CEBU, CLOSED ON JANUARY 2, 2007 FOR NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING IN HONOR OF PRESIDENT GERALD FORD
President George W. Bush has declared Tuesday, January 2, 2007 as a National Day of Mourning in honor of the memory of President Gerald R. Ford, who passed away on December 26, 2006.
All U.S. Government Departments and Agencies will be closed that day as a mark of respect for the memory of President Ford.
The U.S. Embassy in Manila and the U.S. Consular Agency in Cebu will be closed for business on Tuesday, January 2. All interviews for U.S. scheduled for Tuesday, January 2 will be re-scheduled on Wednesday, January 3.
The U.S. Embassy is contacting all applicants to inform them of the change.
President Ford was a great man who devoted the best years of his life to serving his country. He was also a strong supporter of U.S.-Philippines relations, and served in the U.S. Navy in support of the landings in Leyte and Mindoro during World War WII.
He visited the Philippines as President in December 1975.
Funeral and memorial services for President Ford are taking place from December 29 through January 3. The United States is honored and delighted to host Vice President Noli de Castro, who will represent the Philippines at President Ford's funeral.
