COTABATO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 04 Jul) – Philippine authorities detained a man accused as behind a deadly bomb attack in the restive southern region.
Police and military reports said the man was arrested on Tuesday on a village in Tacurong City, where five people had been killed in a bombing in April.
The man is being investigated for his alleged links with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and Jemaah Islamiya.
The MILF, the country’s largest Muslim rebel group, is talking peace with Manila in an effort to end more than three decades of insurgency in Mindanao.
The MILF previously denied any links to terrorism and has publicly condemned the use violence. (Mark Navales)

Police Captured Suspected Bomber In Southern Philippines

(Mindanao Examiner Photo Service/Mark Navales)SULTAN KUDARAT (Mindanao Examiner / 10 May) – Philippine police captured one of four alleged bomber tagged as behind the deadly attack in Tacurong City in the southern province of Sultan Kudarat, officials said Thursday.
Provincial police chief, Superintendent Teng Tocao said the suspect, Taya Kulat, was captured after a running gun battle at a village in Kalawag town.
“He is one of those involved in the attack and we are still tracking down the others,” Tocao told the regional newspaper, the Mindanao Examiner.
Police filed criminal charges against the man, said to be a local supporter of the Indonesian terror group, Jemaah Islamiya. “We are investigating his link to the terrorist group,” Tocao said, adding, the man was captured on Wednesday.
He said policemen seized hand guns from Kulat, who was tracked down with information provided by civilians.
The explosion on Tuesday at a packed billiard hall in Tacurong killed and injured about three dozen people, according to a regional army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Julieto Ando.
Army Major General Raymundo Ferrer, commander of the 6th Infantry Division, blamed the Jemaah Islamiya for the blast.
He said security forces were hunting down a senior Jemaah Islamiya bomber, Zulkifli bin Hir, also known as Marwan, believed hiding in central Mindanao since 2003.
Zulkifli, a Malaysian citizen, also heads the Kumpulun Mujahidin Malaysia (KMM) terrorist organization, according to the U.S. Department of State.
Washington included Zulkifli to its most-wanted list and offered a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to his arrest. He was believed to be involved in multiple deadly bomb attacks in the Philippines and is said to be working with the local terrorist group, Abu Sayyaf.
His younger brother, Taufik bin Abdul Halim, was also implicated in the 2001 Jakarta Atrium Mall bombing, and currently is in detention in Indonesia.
Aside from Zulkifli, Philippine authorities, aided by U.S. forces, are also tracking down two other Jemaah Islamiya bombers, Dulmatin and Umar Patek, on Jolo island in the Sulu Archipelago off Mindanao region. (Mark Navales and Juan Magtanggol)

Explosion In South RP Kills Suspected Bomber
COTABATO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 18 Apr) – A powerful explosive rigged to a motorcycle exploded late Wednesday in the southern Philippines, killing its rider, police said.
Police said the explosion occurred at around 6.30 p.m. in Cotabato City in the troubled province of Maguindanao. One civilian was also wounded from the explosion just outside a residential village called Happy Homes.
“We still don’t know what really happened, except that a motorcycle exploded and its rider was killed. We are awaiting full reports from our investigators about this explosion,” a police officer, Jose Dimaano, told the Mindanao Examiner.
Police have put up roadblocks and checkpoints in Cotabato following the blast.
Reporters who were in the area said the powerful explosion decapitated the body of the still unidentified man. Police suspect the man was a bomber and that the explosive may have accidentally detonated.
It was unknown if the bomb was intended to target civilians or if the man had any links with the Abu Sayyaf and Jemaah Islamiya or the Moro National Liberation Front.

Sayyaf Bomber Captured In South RP
COTABATO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 13 Mar) – Security forces arrested a suspected Abu Sayyaf bomber in a raid before dawn Tuesday in southern Philippines, officials said.
Officials said Ahmad Saludin was captured at around 3 a.m. in his hideout in the remote village of Tambo in Sultan Mastura town in Shariff Kabunsuan province.
Soldiers and policemen recovered from Saludin an anti-rocket rigged to a cellular phone to trigger detonation.
It was unknown whether Saludin has ties with the Indonesian terror group Jemaah Islamiya or the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, previously linked by Philippine authorities to the spate of attacks in the troubled region.
Little was known about Saludin except the military’s claim that he is a member of the Abu Sayyaf group tied to al-Qaeda terror network. (Juan Magtanggol and Juley Reyes)

MILF Man Held On Bomb Charges In South RP
GENERAL SANTOS CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 13 Nov) - Police arrested a member of the Philippines' largest Muslim rebel group, Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), for allegedly transporting homemade bomb in the troubled Mindanao region, rocked by a spate of bomb attacks last month.
Blah Platon was intercepted on a motorcycle before dawn Monday at a police checkpoint on a highway in Tacurong town in Sultan Kudarat province, a known stronghold of the MILF, which is currently negotiating peace with Manila, reports said.
Police said the man was trained in explosives by the Jemaah islamiya and is also wanted by authorities for kidnapping and has a P175,000 bounty on his head.
The MILF said it is investigating the report.
"We have no reports about this, but we will look into this allegation. The MILF is not a terrorist group, but a revolutionary organization. The MILF is not involved in any terroristic activities."
"We are currently negotiating peace with the Philippine government and we are sincere with the talks," the MILF spokesman, Eid Kabalu, told the Mindanao Examiner by phone from a rebel base in the south.
Authorities were investigating whether Platon was involved in the series of bomb attacks last month in Sultan Kudarat, North Cotabato and Cotabato City that killed at least 14 people.
Police linked the MILF to the bombings and filed criminal charges against rebel chieftain Murad Ebrahim and several of his commanders, including Jemaah Islamiya bombers Dulmatin and Umar Patek. But Manila later dropped the charges against the MILF after the rebels warned that linking Ebrahim could scuttle the peace talks.
