Japanese man killed in Zamboanga City

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / May 15, 2010) – A Japanese man was killed in an attack in his home in the southern Philippine port city of Zamboanga, police said.

Police identified the foreigner as a 71-year old Tokio Miyake, from Osaka City, but was leaving in Zamboanga City for several years now with his Filipino family. It said two men stabbed Miyake in his room on Friday in the village of Pasonanca.

Police launched an investigation into the motive of the killing, but the murder was believed connected to failed burglary.

Other reports said Miyake’s Filipino helper Analyn Abejero told police investigators that she saw two men rushed out of the room of the septuagenarian.

She said she was roused from sleep by a commotion inside Miyake’s room. The maid told police she went to the room and man came rushing out, shoving her to the couch, a local television ABS-CBN reported.

It said Abejero saw two men fled - one exiting through the main door and the other through the kitchen door.

She said she saw Miyake sprawled and bloodied on the floor. He was stabbed in the chest with an ice-pick.

The unabated killings in Zamboanga City had worried many residents and dozens of people were either killed or wounded in gun attacks since early this year largely blamed by authorities to contract murder and feud. (Mindanao Examiner)

Man Killed, 5 Others Injured In Zamboanga Farm House Burglary

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Oct. 11, 2008) – Police killed a man in a firefight Saturday after he and three others broke into a farm house in Zamboanga City in Mindanao, officials said.

Officials said the gunmen barged in the house in Baluno village and shot and injured one of the house occupants, Helen Rebelleza after she screamed for help. Her 12-year old daughter was also injured by a stray bullet.

Police captured all three gunmen who were wounded in the fighting. The farm house is owned by Sulu Mayor Hussin Amin.

Chief Insp. Hado Edding, of the local police force, identified the slain burglar as Arnon Hermegildo. Those arrested were Joe Lie Evangelio and a man known only by his first name, Badie.

The woman’s husband, Eric Rebelleza, said the armed men broke into the farm house at around 1 p.m.

Edding said the men were involved in previous robberies and had been implicated in the murder of a motorcycle driver and carnappings in Zamboanga. (Erico Rosco)

Robbers Kill House Occupant In Davao City

DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / June 9, 2008) – Burglars barged into a house in the southern Filipino city of Davao and killed its occupant, police said Monday.

Police said the 60-year old Florencia Tobiano was hacked several times and already dead neighbors discovered her body inside the house in Calinan district over the weekend.

Police said Tobiano was probably asleep when the burglars breached into the house. It was unknown how much the robbers took off. (Romy Bwaga)

Ateneo Burglar Jumps From Police Building, Breaks Head

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Dec. 13, 2007) – A young man arrested on burglary charges is in serious condition after jumping from a police building in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines.

The suspect broke into the Ateneo University on Wednesday and stole several bags of grade school students on the 3rd floor where he was arrested and handed over to the police.

At the police station, he jumped from the 2nd floor while waiting for investigators and broke his head. A boy who witnessed the incident said the suspect suddenly jumped out of the window.

The man was seriously injured and is in critical condition at a local hospital.

it was unknown how the man was able to enter the Ateneo University in broad daylight despite a strict security at the entrance. The breach in security in one of the city's most expensive schools has alarmed many parents. (Mindanao Examiner)
