RP Planes Bomb Fleeing Insurgents In Troubled South

DAVAO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 11 Apr) – Government planes bombed Wednesday New People's Army rebels fleeing a military offensive in the southern Philippines.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, but OV-10 bombers pounded enemy positions after rebels released some 200 civilians they briefly held and used them as shield against pursuing soldiers in the outskirts of Panabo City in Davao del Norte province.

Officials said troops were pursuing a band of rebels behind a prison raid last week in Panabo City.

Chief Supt. Andres Caro, regional police chief, said the rebels have released their hostages and are now in government shelter in Panabo. "All the hostages are safe," he told the Mindanao Examiner.

"Philippine Air Force's OV-10 bombers have conducted a series of bombing attacks on the rebels who are reportedly hiding in the two hinterland villages," said Army Maj. Randolph Cabangbang, a regional military spokesman.

There was no immediate statement from rebel leaders about the fighting. The military and police blamed the NPA for the daring raid at the Davao penal farm where rebel, disguised as government troops, carted more than 100 assorted weapons. (Romy Bwaga)

THE GOOD NEWS: Compostela, Panabo Win Nutrition Award

COMPOSTELA VALLEY (Mark Navales / 23 Nov) – Compostela Valley province and Panabo City in the southern Philippines were both named as 2005 Consistent Regional Winner in Nutrition (CROWN), local officials said on Thursday.

Provincial governor Jose Caballero vowed to sustain Compostela’s aggressive nutrition program that will benefit more people, especially in remote villages.

"We must sustain the nutrition program. We are conceptualizing a program that would enhance our existing nutrition program. We want to modify it to also put emphasis on pregnant mothers, not only undernourished children," he told reporters.

The Philippine Information Agency said Compostela Valley has put up the "Lamdag sa Panginabuhi Center" which empowered poor families to have sustainable livelihood.

The provincial government, it said, also provided livestock animals for backyard raising and distributed vegetables and fruit-tree seedlings to poor families under the Lamdag sa Panginabuhi program.

While Panabo City established several feeding centers in at least 40 villages as part of its nutrition program, it said.

"The Panabo government through its Nutrition Office has encouraged backyard vegetable gardening. This is one way of ensuring the health of children and the availability of nutrition foods," a statement from the city’s information office, said.
