CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 15 Feb) – Communist insurgents killed a government soldier and wounded four more in an attack Thursday in Compostela Valley province in Mindanao, the military said.
The military said the soldiers were members of the army’s engineering brigade and working on humanitarian projects in Mabini town.
The soldiers were preparing to work on a water system in the village of Cabuyoan when dozens of New People’s Army fighters opened fire on them at around 7 a.m.
More troops were sent to the town to hunt down the insurgents, but the province is a known NPA stronghold.
Last week, patrolling government troops killed a rebel in firefight in the southern town of Lianga.
The rebels were blamed for raiding last month a gold mining site in Mount Diwalwal in Monkayo town and destroyed a bulldozer and carted away several weapons owned by security guards.
The NPA is the armed wing of the outlawed Communist Party of the Philippines, which is fighting the past three decades for the establishment of a Maoist state in the country.
The United States listed the CPP and NPA, including its political wing, the National Democratic Front as foreign terrorist organizations, on Manila’s prodding. President Gloria Arroyo has vowed to destroy the NPA before her term ends in 2010. (Mindanao Examiner)
