ONE MESSENGER DOWN. Elizabeth Pastolero, widow of slain journalist Hernani Pastolero, looks at the body of her husband, as she is being comforted by Chief Supt. Joel Goltiao, chief of police forces in the Muslim autonomous region in Mindanao, in Sultan Kudarat town in Shariff Kabunsuan province. Gunmen shot and killed Pastolero, 64, editor of the weekly paper Lightning Courier, as he was sipping coffee in front of his house 19 February 2007.
Goltiao created “Task Force Pastolero” to focus and dig deeper in the investigation. Philippine National Police Director General Oscar Calderon stresses the need for the PNP to protect journalists who are under threats and make speedy probe on the murders. Dozens of journalists have been killed since President Gloria Arroyo assumed the presidency in 2001, making the Philippines the most dangerous place for journalists after Iraq.
