Ex-Basilan Army Chief, Now Heads Visayas Force

CEBU (Mindanao Examiner / 20 Mar) – A Philippine Army commander blamed for failing to prevent an Abu Sayyaf attack in Basilan island has been promoted as chief of army forces in central Philippines.

Maj. Gen. Jovenal Narcise has been named as new chief of the 3rd Infantry Division in Western Visayas region, replacing Maj. Gen.Victor Ibrado, who was designated as commander of the elite army’s Special Operations Command.

Narcise was the army commander in Basilan island when Abu Sayyaf militants raided a Catholic church and a hospital in Lamitan town in 2001. Dozens of people were also hostage and killed by the Abu Sayyaf during the raid.

Prior to his new assignment, Narcise was the Philippine Army’s chief of staff.

"He (Narcise) is qualified for the position based on seniority, and his experience as brigade commander. We trust the wisdom of the Board of Generals," said Philippine Army spokesman Maj. Ernesto Torres, Jr.

The Board of Generals, which consists of senior commanders in the armed forces, recommended Narcise to head the 3rd Infantry Division. (With a report from Juley Reyes)
