Zamboanga's Market Chief Killed, Wife Injured In Ambush

ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 08) – Unidentified gunmen killed a government official and wounded his wife in an attack in Zamboanga City in the southern Philippines, police said.

Police said Idris Abdullah, Zamboanga City’s market superintendent, was shot late Wednesday near Luyahan village. Idris was on a motorcycle with his wife and heading home when they were attacked.

No individual of group claimed responsibility for the ambush, police said.

Radio reports said Idris was shot repeatedly in the chest and died instantly. His wife was also shot and wounded. "He was shot in the chest up to seven times," the radio network dzRZ reported.

The motive of the attack was unknown, but there had been reports about anomalies in the market, from illegal taxation to extortion and proliferation of fake market permits.

It was unclear whether these anomalies were connected to the killing of Idris or not. (Mindanao Examiner)
