Gunmen Attack Mayor's House In Southern Philippines

ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR (Mindanao Examiner / 01 Apr) – One person was killed after gunmen attacked late Sunday the house of a town mayor in the southern Filipino town of Dimataling near Zamboanga del Sur province.

The attack, which occurred at around 9 p.m., targeted the house of Mayor Haniel Baya, a town official said.

It was unknown what triggered the raid, but the mayor is a staunch government supporter and was a former commander of a militia force that helped security forces maintained peace and order in the area.

Regional army chief Lt. Gen. Eugenio Cedo said they were trying to confirm the reports. “We have no reports yet,” he told the Mindanao Examiner newspaper by phone.

The attack coincided with the start of election campaign for the May national polls. It was not immediately known whether the attack had anything to do with politics. (Mindanao Examiner)
