ZAMBOANGA CITY - ECI Telecom (NASDAQ: ECIL), a global provider of networking infrastructure equipment, announced Monday that the Telecoms Infrastructure Corporation of the Philippines (TelicPhil), a consortium of seven franchised telecom operators, has again selected ECI’s optical solution to expand the National Digital Transmission Network (NDTN), Business Wire reported.
This third phase of the network expansion includes a 16-channel, 10Gb/s DWDM backbone that will enable TelicPhil to cost-effectively deliver increased capacity for bandwidth-intensive voice, data and video services to business and residential users across the southern Philippines.
ECI has been involved in all three phases of expansion, it said.
TelicPhil will deploy ECI’s XDM® Converged Multi-Service Provision Platform (MSPP) and All-Range™ ROADM for this network expansion.
Previously, the network connecting the Mindanao islands had a transmission capacity of only 2.5Gb/s, rendering the network unable to meet the increasing user demands for high-bandwidth services.
The XDM network utilizes various state-of-the-art DWDM technologies, including high power EDFA and Raman amplifiers and advanced signal modulation and coding techniques, in order to cost-effectively bridge long distances including island hopping.
TelicPhil chose the XDM because it enables expansion of the NDTN to a 160 Gb/s DWDM network and thus make more services available to users.
Furthermore, the highly flexible XDM gives TelicPhil the ability to support multiple interfaces like SDH/SONET, Ethernet, PDH, DWDM and easily add new services efficiently, while providing link resiliency.
“Having worked with ECI on the previous two NTDN expansions, we have great confidence in the equipment and solutions offered and its people,” said Henry Galingan, President & General Manager of TelicPhil. “From the beginning, ECI has been an excellent partner, providing high quality service, constant support and timely solutions to fill our needs.”
“ECI is proud to be part of one of the largest network backbones in the Philippines,” said Aviel Tenenbaum, President of ECI Telecom’s Asia Pacific Regional Business Unit. “This win not only strengthens our presence in Southeast Asia, but demonstrates the flexibility of our optical platform to assist in complex environments while connecting new regions to greater global communications.”
Background Information
The first NDTN expansion was awarded to ECI Telecom in 2004 for the delivery of the XDM converged optical network solution. The capacity of the existing 2.5G NDTN was almost full.
The system needed to be expanded, increasing the network to a 10G system, using DWDM platform on a 1+0 transmission scheme. ECI Telecom has again been tapped to carry out the expansion using its expertise in DWDM and SDH technology with an additional 2x10Gbps capacity, empowering it with significant additional strength to haul voice, data and internet traffic to and from major points to the rest of the country.
This expansion will meet continuously growing demand for high bandwidth connectivity in the country.
The third phase was awarded to ECI Telecom in 2006, and the network is utilized by BayanTel (85.6859%), Digitel (2.8777%), Smart (5.1848%) and Globe Telecom (6.2516%), leading carriers in the region.
About Telecoms Infrastructure Corporation of the Philippines (TelicPhil) TelicPhil was formed to act as maintenance contractor of the National Digital Transmission Network (NDTN).
NDTN is the country’s second privately owned telecommunication’s backbone. It is a joint project of seven enfranchised telecom companies led by BayanTel, which has majority stake of more than 83 percent in the asset. Other co-owning members are Smart, Globe, Extelcom, Digitel, ETPI and PT&T.
Launched in 1999, the NDTN links the country to deliver transmission of telephone long distance services, cellular traffic, high-speed data, video, internet, broadcast signals and other communication services.
TelicPhil is 57 percent owned by BayanTel, with the rest of the stake distributed among the other co-owners.
TelicPhil is envisaged to provide services for the design, planning and development of telecommunications transmission systems and facilities including but not limited to the preparation of feasibility studies, market research, marine and terrestrial surveys, management, construction and operation of facilities.
