COMPOSTELA VALLEY (Mindanao Examiner / 08 Jun) – Security forces mounted fresh operation Friday against the New People Army rebels in the southern Filipino province of Compostela Valley, where six soldiers died in fierce clashes.
Troops were pursuing the rebels blamed for the attack on an army unit in the hinterland village of Rizal in Monkayo town. Security officials said eight other soldiers were wounded in Thursday fighting.
Army Brig. Gen. Carlos Holganza said two NPA rebels were also killed and five more injured in the clash.
The fighting lasted for more than 4 hours, he said, adding soldiers battled some 100 rebels near their encampment, which military forces later captured.
"It's a big camp, equipped with tunnels and running trenches. They could have occupied it for a year," Holganza told the independent regional newspaper, the Mindanao Examiner. (With a report from Juley Reyes)
