ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Dec. 6, 2008) – Government soldiers raided Saturday an alleged hideout of the Abu Sayyaf group in the southern Philippine island of Sulu where they seized four automatic weapons and hundreds of munitions, a regional army spokesperson said.
Lt. Steffani Cacho said troops swooped down on the village of Manggis in Indanan town after intelligence reports pinpointed the location of the hideout.
Troops made no arrest, but the military said the recovery of the weapons was already a victory against the Abu Sayyaf.
“This development in Sulu is a positive step towards our fight against terrorism and in neutralizing the Abu Sayyaf. The recovery of the firearms and ammunition will effectively cripple the group as these are of great operation value,” she said.
Cacho said the small cache of weapons were believed owned by Gafur Jumdail, a leader of the Abu Sayyaf blamed for Wednesday attack on a police station in Maimbung, on the opposite side of Indanan. (Mindanao Examiner)
