COTABATO CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Jan. 21, 2011) – Police continue to hunt down over a dozen inmates who escaped from a prison facility in the southern Filipino city of Cotabato, officials said Friday.

Troops are also helping police track down the inmates who bolted from jail before dawn on Thursday. One of them was recaptured, officials said.

Officials said the prisoners destroyed the iron bars of their cells and escaped under cover of darkness. It was not immediately known why the escape was not detected by the jail guards, but the prison warden was removed from his position and is facing administrative charges.

Most of those who escaped were facing various criminal charges. Police have launched a manhunt to recapture the prisoners. (With a report from Mark Navales)
