Weapons cache recovered in Cotabato cemetery

COTABATO CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Jan. 21, 2011) – Police commandos have recovered a cache of high-powered weapons at a cemetery in Cotabato City in the southern Philippine province of Maguindanao, officials said Friday.

Officials said members of the elite Special Action Force swooped down late Thursday on the cemetery after receiving intelligence reports that a huge weapons cache was buried there.

Among the weapons recovered by the police were five machine guns, mortar tubes and munitions, among others.

It was unknown whether the weapons were part of rebel arsenal or owned by the influential Ampatuan clan or their followers, whose patriarch and sons were implicated in the brutal murders of 57 people in 2009 in Maguindanao province.

Security forces had seized hundreds of high-power weapons and munitions the clan allegedly hid in various places in the province.

Officials said police is still investigating who owns the weapons. (Mindanao Examiner)
