Lilies clog Rio in Mindanao

COTABATO CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / June 14, 2011) – Tons of water lilies now clogging a huge part of a major river in the southern Philippines are threatening to flood many areas in Maguindanao and nearby provinces in the Muslim autonomous region.

Many villages in Maguindanao and North Cotabato have been submerged in flood since last week after heavy rains over flowed rivers. At least 16 towns are under water in Maguindanao and the floods also affected over half a million people.

In Cotabato City, more than a dozen villages were also flooded and water lilies in Rio Grande de Mindanao are clogging the river which runs through several provinces in Central Mindanao.

Lilies also clogged the river in previous years that caused it to overflow and flood many areas in Cotabato City.

Government officials also declared a state of emergency in Maguindanao and Cotabato City. (Mindanao Examiner)
