Palace declares June 20 as special non-working holiday


ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / June 14, 2011) - Philippine President Benigno Aquino III has declared June 20 as a special non-working holiday in the country to give Filipinos time to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of national hero Jose Rizal.

June 19 which falls on Sunday marks Rizal's birthday, but the National Historical Commission of the Philippines requested that the following day be declared as special holiday to give citizens the opportunity to commemorate Rizal’s patriotic deeds and sacrifices for the country, rekindle their admiration and respect for him, and to celebrate this milestone with appropriate ceremonies, state media said.
