Authorities foil bomb attacks in Southern Philippines

COTABATO CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Aug. 13, 2011) – Philippine authorities said it foiled bomb attacks following the discovery Saturday of two powerful improvised explosives in the restive southern region of Mindanao.

One bomb was planted near a street pole on a highway in the town of Datu Unsay in Maguindanao province and the other abandoned at a bus depot in Tacurong City.

Both explosives were assembled from four 60mm and 81mm mortar bombs, but police would not say who was behind the foiled attacks or the motive behind it.

However, the 6th Infantry Division was quick to blame the Jemaah Islamiya for the failed bombings, despite ongoing police investigation.

The army had previously blamed the Jemaah Islamiya and Moro Islamic Liberation Front for past bombings in the southern Philippines. (Mindanao Examiner)
