NPA rebels kill soldier, militia in Davao City checkpoint

DAVAO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Sept. 22, 2011) – Communist rebels killed a government soldier and a militiaman at a checkpoint in Davao City in the southern Philippines, officials said on Thursday.

Officials said duo - Private First Class Mansiwagan and Ortega Cariamen – were killed on Tuesday after New People’s Army rebels intercepted them at a road block in the village of Mapula in Paquibato district.

Army Captain Ricky Mercado, of the 1003rd Infantry Brigade, said the two were shot in the head and chest. “Investigation revealed that both victims, who belonged to the Ata Manobo tribe, sustained gunshot wounds in the head, and Mansiwagan had another bullet wound in his chest, that caused their instantaneous death,” he said.

Mercado said the two left their barracks to attend a wedding ceremony, but failed to return until their bodies were discovered by civilians later in the day.

The NPA, which is fighting for a separate state in the country, did not give any statement about the military allegation. (Mindanao Examiner)
