Filipina worker in Saudi jumps from building to escape abusive employer

MANILA (Mindanao Examiner / Oct. 3, 2011) – A Filipina domestic helper, who was escaping from abuses of her Saudi employer, jumped from the second floor of their apartment in Al-Khobar City.

The Filipino group called Migrante-Middle East, said Hadeah Macalpang, 33, was rushed to King Fahad hospital after breaking her bones from the jump that occurred last month.

A report by a Migrante welfare officer, Marcial Abay Jr., said Macalpang, a native of Lanao del Norte province in Mindanao, told them that she was maltreated and abused by her employer.

“Our Migrante officers along with other OFW leaders headed by Mr. Abay Jr. got a chance to talk with OFW Macalpang, during a hospital visit, who claimed that she was abused and maltreated by her employer prompting her to escape by jumping from the 2nd floor of her employer’s residence,” said John Leonard Monterona, the regional coordinator of Migrante-Middle East.

Macalpang also said that she was prevented by her employer from returning to the Philippines despite completing her job contract. Worse, the Filipina only received a total of 4,700 Saudi riyals or about P56,000 salaries for her 28 months.

Migrante said it has informed the Philippine labor office in Al-Khobar about the plight of the Filipina. (Mindanao Examiner)
