Basilan Cop Killed, Son Injured In Attack

ZAMBOANGA CITY (Zamboanga Journal / 02 Apr) Motorcycle gunmen shot dead a policeman and injured his son in an attack Sunday in the town of Lamitan in Basilan island in the southern Philippines, officials said.

Officials said SPO2 Salvador Castro II was driving his motorcycle with his son Salvador III and a nephew when the gunmen drove near them and then opened fire with automatic pistols near the village of Semut around 8.30 a.m.

The policeman was instantly killed and his son injured, and the third passenger survived the attack. "Castro was shot in the head. He was killed on the spot," the town's deputy chief of police, Inspector Elmer Acuna, said.

Police also appealed to those who witnessed the attack to help in the investigation by providing information about the assailants.

Police said it is still investigating the motive of the attack and no group or individual claimed responsibility for the killing, but the island is a known lair of the Abu Sayyaf group blamed for the series of killing and bombings in the southern region.

But the island is also notorious for vendetta killings among warring clans and police is investigating whether Castro's killing was connected to feud or not, or had something to do with his job.
