PAGADIAN CITY (Darwin Wee / 08 Sept) The Department of Science and Technology is to hold two days of training on food processing and seminar-workshop on packaging and labeling of processed food in Zamboanga del Sur province.
Ebenezer Tulog, a provincial science and technology officer, said the two-day training and seminar will start on September 14 as one of the major activities during the celebration of the province's 54th anniversary.
He said it would be held at the Food Processing and Livelihood Resource Center at the Provincial Government Complex in Dao in Pagadian City.
The Zamboanga del Sur Women's Association has embarked in the production of indigenous processed food, such as preserved sweet potato called "halaya", jellies, jam, bottled Spanish sardines, dried fish, ginger drink or locally called as "salabat", cassava chips among others.
Grace Noceja and Josie L. Diaz, from the Packaging Research and Development Center, will be the resource speakers.
Tulog said the packaging and labeling is the art of science and technology of bringing goods from its source to places of consumption at minimum cost. "It improves the quality and shelf life of the product, reduces waste, secure its safety and handling during delivery and enhance the products sales appeal. More than that, it adds value to the product," he said.
