ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 07 Apr) – A Philippine military patrol killed three gunmen in a firefight at sea off the southern island of Tawi-Tawi, officials said on Saturday.
Officials said the clash occurred on Thursday after a team of marine soldiers tried to intercept a speedboat which failed to stop for inspection. The passengers opened fire on the patrol and triggered a sea battle.
A separate military report released on Saturday said soldiers recovered the bodies and several automatic rifles from the boat.
It was not immediately known whether the gunmen were members of the Abu Sayyaf group or pirates operating in the area. (Mindanao Examiner)
