MILF Rebels Yield In Southern Philippines

NORTH COTABATO (Mindanao Examiner / 11 Apr) – Five members of the rebel group Moro Islamic Liberation Front surrendered to the military in the southern Philippines after a series of negotiations, officials said.

The rebels also surrendered assorted weapons, including rifle grenades, to the military in the village of Kibinis in North Cotabato’s Carmen town.

Lt. Col. Ernesto Torres, Jr., army spokesman, said the rebels, who surrendered recently, were members of the MILF’s 108th Base Command.

He identified the five as Commander Mokatil Batuan Tapay, 36; Abdulah Solaiman, 22; Manedsin Batunan Tapay, 32; Cesar Tungal, 27; and Masang Kangal Saavedra, 26.

The MILF denied the five were members of the rebel group, which is currently negotiating peace with the government. The MILF is the country's largest Muslim rebel group fighting for independence in southern Philippines. (With a report from Juley Reyes and Mark Navales)

It does not matter if they are member of MILF or not. It is one less gun out of the streets.
