Security Lapses Blamed For Daring Prison Raid In Mindanao

DAVAO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 09 Apr) – Philippine military chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon on Monday said lapses in security were to blame for the daring raid by communist insurgents on a prison facility in Mindanao.

Dozens of New People’s Army gunmen raided the prison’s armory in Davao del Norte’s Panabo town late last week and carted over 100 assorted weapons.

"Definitely, there were some lapses," Esperon said.

Prison authorities have began an investigation into the raid, where rebels, disguised as government soldiers, were able to pass through layers of security in the area.

The head of the prison facility was also reported to have been replaced.

The NPA claimed responsibility for the raid and said the weapons will be used to arm new members. (With reports from Juley Reyes in Manila and Romy Bwaga in Mindanao)
