Cop Sacked For Alleged Involvement In Broadcaster's Slay

MANILA, Philippines (GMANews.TV / August 18, 2008) - National Police Director General Avelino Razon on Monday ordered the relief of a police inspector in General Santos City who was allegedly involved in the killing of Radio Mindanao Network broadcaster Dennis Cuesta early this month.

Razon issued the order against Police Insp. Redempto Acharon after a meeting with officers of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) and the Philippine Press Institute.

The NUJP also demanded for immediate investigation of the GenSan police force for alleged involvement and cover-ups of the investigations of the Cuesta case.

Razon ordered Task Force Usig to look into NUJP's reports.

Razon also ordered the Soccksargen Regional Police District to ensure the safety of Cuesta's family.

To recall, Cuesta was shot by unidentified gunmen last August 4. He died five days later in a hospital.

Friends and colleagues visited Cuesta at the hospital Saturday after hearing he had slightly opened his left eye and moved his eyeball. Doctors later said his heartbeat slowly weakened to the point that it could no longer be revived.

Three days after Cuesta's shooting, another RMN broadcaster, Martin Roxas, was shot dead by assailants in the province of Capiz.

Rey Bayoging, RMN's assistant vice president, said the attacks on Cuesta and Roxas, whom he described as hard-hitting commentators, were work-related.

On August 18, Friday, Ricardo "Anjo" Julia, a journalist from Bicol, was also gunned down.
Reports said that Julia, who worked for a radio station and a local newspaper, sustained four gunshot wounds, possibly from a revolver-type weapon. - (Sophia Dedace)
