NORTH COTABATO, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / August 9, 2009) – Six people were injured on Sunday afternoon after the passenger van they were riding overturned on a highway in Makilala town in North Cotabato province in the southern Philippines, police said.

Police said the van was traveling on the when one of its front tire burst. The van, which came from Davao City, rolled six times and landed on a bushy area.

The wounded, including the van’s driver, were rushed to hospital. (Geo Solmerano)

Freak road accident kills 2 in Mindanao

KIDAPAWAN CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / May 22, 2009) – Two people were killed and five others injured in a freak road accident Friday in the Mindanao city of Kidapawan, police said.

Police said a truck rammed several motorcycles and a multi-cab after losing its break on a highway.

“Two persons were killed in the accident,” said SPO1 Raymundo Lam-an, of the local traffic police force.

He said the truck driver, Loreto Castillo, lost control of the wheel and rammed two motorcycles which hit the multi-cab and in turn pinned the passengers of another motorcycle.

10 injured after van falls off cliff in Mindanao

KIDAPAWAN CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / May 21, 2009) – A commuter van fell from a cliff Thursday inuring 10 passengers in the southern Philippines, police said.

Police said the van’s driver, Wilfredo Abiar, 33, apparently lost control of the wheel in Kidapawan City.

The injured passengers were rushed to the local hospital for treatment. Police released the names of those injured as Jeffrey Kisam, 23; Josephine Magno, 23; Leonides Soriano, 79; Joel Gutierez, 59; Geraldine Tonod, 38; Alfred Nablo, 20; Rod Bryner Noveno, 19; Rovlyn Bermiro, 28 and Arne Soriano, 10. Woman hurt in Kidapawan road accident

KIDAPAWAN CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / May 12, 2009) – A woman was hurt on Tuesday after a passenger jeep rammed her motorcycle in Kidapawan City in North Cotabato province in Mindanao, police said.

Police said the woman, Honey Espeso, was rushed to hospital after the accident that occurred at around 3.30 p.m.

The jeep driver, Joel Ama, said he did not notice the motorcycle and blamed the narrow road for the mishap. His passengers said they screamed at the driver to stop the jeep because the woman was pinned underneath the vehicle.

The accident caused a traffic jam along Quezon Boulevard. Senior Police Officer 1 Raymundo Lam-an, of the local police force, investigated the driver. It was unknown if Ama would be charged with reckless driving. (Giovani Solmerano)

Motorbike accidents rampant in Zamboanga

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Mar. 24, 2009) – The number of motorcycle accidents in Zamboanga City in Mindanao has been steadily increasing as authorities appealed for safety on the road.

Police said it recorded an average of 100 cases of motorcycle accidents every month and most of these involved young drivers whose ages range were between 18 and 24.

Zamboanga City has more than 36,000 privately owned motorcycles. And a huge number of unregistered bikes are also believed plying the roads despite a strict government campaign against erring drivers.

Police said a 1,298 motorcycle accidents with ten fatalities had been recorded in 2008, but the first two months of this year have already noted more than 200 road accidents.

And most of these accidents had been blamed to reckless drivers and drank driving, it said.

Dozens Hurt In Zamboanga Road Collision

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Feb. 08, 2009) – Two trucks transporting construction workers collided in the southern Philippine port city of Zamboanga and police said as many as four dozen people were hurt in the accident.

Police said the accident occurred Saturday afternoon in the village of Manicahan. It said the driver of one of trucks tried to overtake a motorcycle, but collided head on with another truck along the Maria Clara Lobregat highway.

Radio reports said the victims were rushed to hospitals for fractures and bruises and that the police are still investigating the accident. (Mindanao Examiner)

Two bike riders killed, 2 others wounded in Zamboanga road mishap

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Jan. 27, 2009) – Two motorcycle riders were killed when they collided with each other on a village in Zamboanga City in Mindanao, police said Tuesday.

Police said the accident occurred Monday in the village called Boalan. It said the two riders Rainier Saavedra and Manuel Epanto were coming from opposite directions when their motorcycle collided. Both drivers died instantly.

“Both drivers of motorcycle were pronounced dead on the spot by the responding medical team from STOP DEATH due to severe head injuries,” Police officer Arnold Espares told the Mindanao Examiner.

Police said Saavedra was traveling from north heading south when his motorcycle collided with another. Epanto was with his son, Mannix Epanto. The boy was also injured.

It said another motorcycle rider, Roberto Jammang, passing near the crash site was also injured by debris from the collision. Jammang and the boy were both rushed to hospital. (Sheri Gay P. Catague)

Truck Slams On Tree, Driver Hurt In South RP

DAVAO DEL SUR, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Nov. 13, 2008) – A truck transporting lumber slammed into a tree Thursday in the southern Philippines hurting its driver and passengers.

Police is investigating the accident which occurred at around 7.15 a.m. on a highway near the village of Kinuskusan in Bansalan town. The identities of the driver and his passengers were not immediately available.

Accidents are common in the area and police appealed to motorists and travelers to take extra precaution and obey road rules. (Geonarri Solmerano)

Vehicle Rams Grotto, 18 Injured In Zamboanga City

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Oct. 30, 2008) – A government vehicle rammed into a grotto injuring 18 passengers on Thursday in Zamboanga City in the southern Philippines, police said.

Police said the passengers, mostly village officials, were rushed to hospitals, after suffering wounds from the crash.

The officials were on their way to pick up government rice allocation at the warehouse of the National Food Authority when the accident occurred in the village of Bunguiao at around 6 a.m.

Lorry Rams Trike, 2 Killed in South RP

DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / September 7, 2008) – Two persons were killed and another was seriously injured after a lorry rammed their tricycle in the southern Philippine city of Davao, police said.

Police said Florcepida Crais and Ruby Palmis were instantly killed in the mishap that occurred at a highway near the village of Bangkal late Saturday afternoon. The tricycle driver, Jerwin Palmis, was rushed to hospital and is in serious condition.

The lorry driver, Charlie Senario Jr, surrendered to the police after the accident and is being investigated. The lorry was transporting crude oil when it rammed the tricycle.

Meanwhile, unidentified gunmen on Saturday also killed a 32-year old loan collector, Allan Tan, in an attack in San Pedro district. The gunmen fled on motorbike after the attack.

Truck Plunges Into Mindanao Ravine, 15 Killed

DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / August 15, 2008) – Fifteen people had been reported killed and more than a dozen others injured Friday after the truck they riding fell into a ravine in Compostela Valley province in the southern Philippines, reports said.

Police said the accident occurred near Monkayo town after the truck lost its brake and plunged deep into the ravine. It was not immediately known if there were women and children among those killed and injured.

The area is known to be prone to accident because of poor road condition. Many of the victims were hitchhikers and small town miners in Monkayo town, a known gold-rush area in Mindanao. (Mindanao Examiner)

Wayward Truck Kills 2 In Davao City

DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / June 11, 2008) – Two people were killed when a wayward garbage truck hit them while walking at a roadside in the southern Philippine city of Davao, police said Wednesday.

Police said the two victims, Jay and Rollie Rosauro, both cousins, were walking late Tuesday in Calinan district when the government truck hit them. The truck’s driver Emmanuel Palay, Jr. surrendered to the police after the accident.

The driver said he lost control of the wheel. Police investigators said Palay is facing criminal charges. (Romy Bwaga)

Driver Killed After Bike Slams On Truck In South RP

DAVAO ORIENTAL, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / June 7, 2008) – One person was killed and his companion severely injured when the motorcycle they were riding collided with a truck in Mati City in the southern Philippines.

Police said the fatality Royroy Pan, who was driving the motorcycle, was killed instantly in the crash while his passenger Benjo Agbas survived, but is in serious condition at the hospital.

The driver of the truck Iluminado Ponce surrendered to the police and is likely to be charged for the death of Pan. The accident occurred on Thursday, police said. It was not immediately known who was at fault in the mishap. (Romy Bwaga)

Five Killed In Cotabato Road Mishap

COTABATO CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / June 3, 2008) – At least five people were reported killed and over a dozen others injured after a truck fell into a ravine on a village in North Cotabato province in Mindanao island, south of the Philippines.

Police said the driver of the truck apparently lost control of the wheel after its break failed and rammed a motorcycle taxi in the town of President Roxas.

Conflicting police reports claimed as many as five people were killed in the accident on Monday afternoon.

It was unknown whether the driver was killed or not and if there were children among the dead and injured. Most of the victims were hitch riders, according to the police.

Jeep Collides With Truck In Southern Philippines

COTABATO CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Jan. 29, 2008) – More than a dozen people were killed and many others injured, many seriously, after a commuter jeep collided Tuesday with a cargo truck in the southern Philippine province of North Cotabato, police said.

Police said the accident occurred in the town of Carmen. The jeep rammed the truck after overtaking another vehicle at around 8.40 a.m. The jeep’s driver was instantly killed in the crash, including children and women, many were heading to work and schools.

At least 15 other passengers were injured in the accident, police said, adding, most of the injured victims are at a hospital in Kabacan City. (With a report from Mark Navales)

Truck Rams Parked Bus In South RP, 27 Injured

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Oct. 25, 2007) – At least 27 people were injured when a dump truck rammed a parked mini-bus on a remote village in the southern Philippine port city of Zamboanga, police said Thursday.

The accident occurred in the village of Cabaluay on Wednesday and nine children were among the injured, police said.

The driver of the truck fled, but policemen were searching for the man. Police said the bus was parked on the side road when the truck rammed it from behind.

Truck Rams Street Pole, 1 Dead

DAVAO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 27 May) – One person was killed and eleven others injured after the truck they were riding rammed a street lamp in Davao City in the southern Philippines, police said Sunday.

Police said the accident occurred in the village of Saumay in Marilog District on Friday.

The lone casualty was identified as Edolencia Abana. Police released the names of the injured passengers as Zenaida, 33 and Jerson Martetillas, 39; Levie Cortez, 28; Jay Tagaro, 19; Benito Enti, 49; Leonor Jane Abla¤a, 14; Merlyn Tagaro, 39; Edgardo Borja, 23; and the truck driver Andrew Gamoza, 35.

Police said the wounded are still at the Davao Medical Center.

The truck was transporting fresh vegetables to the Bankerohan public market in Davao City when the driver lose control of the wheel after its brake system failed while negotiating a hilly portion of the dirt road. (Romy Bwaga)

18 Injured As Jeep Overturns In Zamboanga Village

ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 15 Feb) – At least 18 people were injured when a passenger jeep overturned Thursday in the outskirts of Zamboanga City in the southern Philippines.

Many of the injured were rushed to the Zamboanga Medical Center.

Police said it is still investigating the cause of the accident, but some of the victims claimed the driver lost control of the steering wheel and the jeep skidded and overturned in the village of Limpapa.

Among those injured were children, hospital staff said.

On Wednesday, a motorcycle man was also killed when his bike collided with a military truck in the village of Santa Maria in Zamboanga City. (Mindanao Examiner)
