ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Mar. 18, 2009) – The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) announced Wednesday the new Pangulong Gloria Scholarship (PGS) program, replacing the PGMA-Training for Work Scholarship (PGMA-TWSP).
The PGS now comes with a better package as it now provides training support fund or allowance to trainees, TESDA said.
Training fees are also increased so the scholars will no longer provide counterpart funds. Assessment fees are also covered in the scholarship package, it added.
Unlike the PGMA-TWSP where scholarship voucher was awarded to individuals, the PGS now adopts a group training scheme. At least 15 to 25 scholars are needed to be able to start a training program, according to TESDA.
The program is part of the government’s economic sustainability plan to reduce unemployment and underemployment in the face of the financial crisis gripping the global economy.
TESDA said it is also aimed to assist the poor and deserving Filipinos to enroll in job-directed training programs and earn the corresponding qualification that will enhance their employability without cost to the scholars.
The objectives of the PGS are to produce a pool of qualified and globally competent workforce which is "job ready"; to develop skills and competencies of the unemployed and the underemployed individuals through training programs of pre-employment skills upgrading and; productivity among others.
It said interested applicants can visit TESDA office in Zamboanga City.

235 Poor Students Get Scholarship Grants In Zamboanga City
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / September 11, 2008) – A Filipino lawmaker granted scholarships to over 200 mostly poor, but deserving students in Zamboanga City in Mindanao island.
Rep. Maria Isabelle Climaco and representatives from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) handed over checks to finance school expenses and the allowances of 235 students on Thursday.
Fifteen students were also granted scholarship certificates from the Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA).
The scholarship program, Climaco said, is part of her project and included in the solon’s legislative agenda and being implemented through the CHED regional office.
Most of the scholars are students from the Western Mindanao State University, the Zamboanga State Polytechnic College, Zamboanga State College Marine Sciences and Technology and TESDA.
Climaco, a native of Zamboanga City, is an advocate of children and women’s rights and active in humanitarian missions here. She also founded the “Escuela de la Infancia,” and one of the most influential politicians in Zamboanga City. (Mindanao Examiner)

Gunman Kills Officer Of Philippine Technical School
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / September 5, 2008) – An unidentified gunman shot dead Friday a senior official of the state-run Technical Education and Skills Development Authority in Zamboanga City.
Village officials identified the victim as Arnold Pimentel, the administrator of the regional TESDA training center here. Pimentel was driving his vehicle when the gunman shot him in the head at around 7.45 a.m. The assailant escaped on motorcycle after the shooting.
TESDA is an agency under the Department of Education responsible for managing and supervising technical education and skills development in the Philippines.
The motive of the attack was unknown, but the rising cases of unsolved murders and crimes in Zamboanga City have worried residents. Authorities continue to downplay the incidents and had tagged previous killings as isolated and blamed the proliferation of illegal weapons to the rising criminalities.
Just last month, gunmen also shot dead an employee of an Internet café here and shot and wounded several more in previous attacks.
In July, two motorcycle gunmen also killed a ship owner, Faustino Saavedra, in Zamboanga City. Saavedra’s family owns the Ever Lines Shipping Company.

President strengthens Task Force on Education, expands C.H.E.D. board
MANILA, Philippines - President Gloria Arroyo has designated the director general of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) as a member of the Teacher Education (TEC) in a move to strengthen the existing mechanisms and role of the Presidential Task Force on Education (PTFE) in synchronizing and harmonizing the country’s education system.
In Executive Orders (EOs) 729 and 730, the President cited the “need to include the technical-vocational sector of education to the TEC and to educate and train the technical-vocational teachers of unquestionable integrity and competence.”
The two EOs were signed by the President on June 4, 2008.The TEC was created by Republic Act 7784, while the TESDA was created by RA 7796.The PTFE, on the other hand, was created by EO 652, which the President signed on Aug. 21, 2007 “to assess, plan and monitor the entire educational system.”
Meanwhile, EO 730 added two private representatives to the Board of advisers of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) which was earlier created by RA 7722.
The two EOs shall take effect 15 days after their publication in a national newspaper of general circulation
