FOR: TROPICAL STORM "MEGI"
Issued at 11:00 a.m., 15 October 2010.

As of 10:00 a.m. today, the Tropical Storm with international name "MEGI" over the Marianas was estimated at 1,300 km east of Southern Luzon (14.7°N, 137.1°E) with maximum sustained winds of 105 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 135 kph. It is moving west northwest at 20 kph.

This weather disturbance is expected to enter the PAR between 12 mn and 2 a.m. tomorrow and may landfall over the eastern coast of Cagayan-Isabela area on Monday afternoon (October 18).

General public and local disaster risk reduction managers - are advised to prepare and take precautionary measures

Fishermen - advised not to venture over the eastern and northern coasts of Luzon

Farmers - advised to monitor weather updates

Travelers - advised not to travel starting on sunday morning, particularly in landslide prone areas of Northern and Eastern Luzon

The next update will be incorporated within the regular issuance of public weather forecast at 5 p.m. today and the next advisory will be issued at 11 a.m. tomorrow.

Synopsis: At 2:00 am today, Tropical Storm "HELEN" was estimated based on radar, satellite and surface data at 140 kms East of Aparri, Cagayan (18.5ºN, 123.2ºE) with maximum sustained winds of 85 kph near the center with gustiness of up to 100 kph. Moving West Northwest at 7 kph.

Forecast:Extreme Northern Luzon and Isabela will have stormy weather with rough to very rough seas while the rest of northern Luzon and aurora will have rains and gusty winds with moderate to rough coastal waters. the rest of Luzon and Visayas particularly the western sections will experience monsoon rains which may trigger flash floods and landslides. Mindanao will have partly cloudy to at times cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms mostly in the afternoon or evening.

Moderate to strong winds blowing from the Southwest will prevail over the rest of Luzon and Visayas and the coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the Southeast to Southwest with slight to moderate seas except during thunderstorms.

Heavy Rains Continue In Mindanao, Residents Warned

COTABATO CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Mar. 21, 2008) – Authorities have warned residents near riverbanks to take precautionary measures as torrential rains continued Friday in the southern Philippines.

Several people had died in the south the past days due to floods and landslides and weather experts said more rains are expected fall.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said although there is no existing tropical cyclone, the tail-end of a cold front are affecting not only Mindanao, but eastern Luzon as well.

“The ridge of North Pacific High Pressure Area which extends over Luzon and the easterly waves that affect Mindanao are the major weather systems which are expected to prevail for the next several days,” it said. (Mark Navales)
