COTABATO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 20 Feb) – Philippine leader Gloria Arroyo on Tuesday condemned the killing of a journalist in the restive region of Mindanao, south of Manila, and ordered police to investigate deeper into the murder, her spokesman said.
Hernani Pastolero, editor of the weekly tabloid Lightning Courier, was shot by two gunmen Monday outside his home in Sultan Kudarat town in Shariff Kabunsuan province.
"We join the media organizations and the public in condemning this recent atrocity," Arroyo’s spokesman Ignacio Bunye said.
President Arroyo, he said, "has already ordered the Philippine National Police to produce clear results in the soonest possible time in the investigation of the case.”
Police already formed the Task Force: Pastolero to help investigate the killing believed connected to a land dispute. But authorities were also investigating whether Pastolero’s work as a journalist was connected to the attack.
The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines and international media watch groups condemned the murder. Pastolero was the first journalist killed this year. (Mindanao Examiner)
